Expansion and Evolution: How We’ve Grown to Serve More of North Texas

Expansion and evolution have defined Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX) for 40 years. As HIV treatment and prevention have advanced, we have grown into a broader, whole‑person health provider without ever leaving the AIDS crisis or our HIV community behind.
From HIV Crisis Response to a Broader Mission
PHNTX began as a lifeline during the HIV/AIDS crisis, when stigma was high and care was scarce. Over time, lifesaving medications, better prevention tools, and strong community support have transformed what it means to live with HIV.

Those advances freed us to ask a bigger question:
How can we bring that same commitment to access and dignity to the rest of our community?
That said, progress does not mean the crisis is over. It means we have new tools to fight it.
Today, HIV care and prevention remain central to our mission, even as we expand. HIV and AIDS still affect our neighbors—especially Black and Latina women, who continue to face higher risks and more barriers to care. Our recent $400,000 Gilead Foundation grant will help us reach more women with HIV prevention, education, and support.
Women are often left out of conversations about HIV prevention and treatment. This funding allows us to expand the work PHNTX has done for decades in HIV prevention and bring those services directly to women in our community, helping them better understand their risk and the prevention options available to them.

A New Focus on Women’s and Pediatric Health
Beyond HIV prevention, women in North Texas need our support.
Statewide, many women delay or skip care due to cost; women with incomes under $25,000 are several times more likely to report frequent physical distress and difficulty accessing care. As of 2022, the uninsured rate among women was 23%, and the rate of mental distress was 20% for women between 18 and 44.
Meanwhile, Texas has the highest rate of uninsured children in the country; about 11.9% of children are uninsured statewide, more than double the U.S. average. In Texas overall, over one million children lacked health coverage in 2024, and in the North Texas region about 15% of children are uninsured, with the majority being Latino. Many uninsured Texas children qualify for Medicaid or CHIP but are not enrolled, often due to administrative and information barriers.
In early 2025, PHNTX shifted focus to offering women’s health and pediatric care to Dallas and the surrounding cities. Expanding women’s health and pediatric services allows families to build long‑term relationships with providers they trust.
Prioritizing Community Healthcare and Whole-Person Health
As we grew, it became clear that many people in Dallas and surrounding cities face the same challenges long seen in HIV care:
- Unaffordable services
- Limited insurance
- Difficulty finding a trusted provider
That reality has driven our evolution into a broader community health organization.
By adding primary care, pharmacy services, and oral health over the past five years, we now help patients manage everyday health needs alongside HIV treatment and prevention. Affordable, integrated care makes it easier for people to get more of what they need in one place, from routine checkups to chronic disease management.

How Your Support Has Helped
None of this growth happens without community support. Within the last year, your generosity equated to:
- $393,000 in insurance assistance
- 64,000 medical visits provided
- 1,000 meals distributed to families in need
- 919 public transport vouchers so patients could receive care
- 200 grocery gift cards for patients in need
These numbers represent real people. These resources went to your neighbors, helping them stay connected to treatment and find new stability because someone like you chose to give.
