Texans went back to the polls on May 26 for the primary runoff elections.

Runoff elections usually have lower turnout, but they still have a big impact. They decide who appears on the general election ballot and help shape the choices voters see in November. In 2026, runoffs helped drive a major change in the U.S. Senate race and set up new matchups for attorney general, lieutenant governor, and other statewide offices that guide health policy.

How many Texans voted in the primary runoff election?

Almost 2 million Texans voted in the primary runoffs. Most of those voters took part in the Republican runoffs, with more than twice as many Republican voters as Democratic voters.

If you look at the full 2026 primary season, more than 4 million Texans voted in either the March primary or the May runoffs. This is the highest midterm primary turnout in Texas history and shows that people are paying attention to this election year.

Results for Big Statewide Races

Several big statewide races were shaped by the runoffs.

  • U.S. Senate
    • Democrat James Talarico will be his party’s nominee for U.S. Senate in November.
    • On the Republican side, Attorney General Ken Paxton won his runoff against longtime U.S. Sen. John Cornyn with about 64% of the vote. A late endorsement from President Trump helped drive strong support from conservative voters.
  • Attorney General
    • Democrat Nathan Johnson won his runoff with about 61% of the vote.
    • Republican Mayes Middleton won his runoff with about 55% of the vote.
    • Texas will choose a new attorney general in November, after more than 10 years with Ken Paxton in that office. The attorney general can play a major role in health policy, lawsuits over Medicaid, and how state laws that affect clinics are enforced.
  • Lieutenant Governor
    • Democrat Vikki Goodwin won her runoff with about 68% of the vote.
    • She will face Republican incumbent Dan Patrick in the general election.
  • Comptroller
    • Democrat Sarah Eckhardt will be on the ballot against Republican Don Huffines.
  • Texas Railroad Commission
    • Democrat Jon Rosenthal will be his party’s nominee.
    • Republican Bo French narrowly defeated incumbent Jim Wright in the runoff with a little over half the vote.
    • The Railroad Commission regulates oil and gas, which affects air, water, and community health.
  • Dallas County District Attorney
    • Former judge Amber Givens defeated incumbent John Creuzot in the Democratic primary and has no Republican opponent. She is set to become the next Dallas County District Attorney.
