Supreme Court’s Ruling is a Critical Step Towards Protecting the LGBTQ+ Community

Prism Health North Texas recognizes the Supreme Court’s ruling today as a critical step towards protecting gay and transgender people from discrimination in the workplace. No longer in this country can someone be denied employment based solely on their sexual identity or orientation. And with employment closely tied to healthcare access with health insurance, no longer will the LGBTQ+ community be denied equal access to affordable healthcare.
While progress is recognized, we recognize the need for further change. The recent ruling by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to limit the government’s interpretation of sex to be only “male or female as determined by biology” will roll back important civil rights protections for the LGBTQ+ community created by the Affordable Care Act. LGBTQ+ individuals can also still suffer discrimination in areas of housing or public accommodations. While more work will be done, we want to recognize today, during Pride Month, our many advocacy partners who have worked tirelessly towards assuring equal rights and protections for the LGBTQ+ community.
