PHNTX Expands Behavioral Health Services

Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX) is proud to announce an expansion of its Behavioral Health Department led by the new Director of Behavioral Health, Dr. Donald Egan. A broad range of new services will be provided at the organization’s Oak Lawn Uptown Physicians Group Health Center at 2801 Lemmon Avenue, Suite 200, in addition to appointments available via telehealth.

The expansion builds on PHNTX’s existing behavioral health, which encompasses three core service areas: psychiatry, counseling, and peer recovery support. The new services will enhance the agency’s capability to support patients with more complex needs by expanding its continuum of care and offering a broader range of treatment interventions.

New services include:

• Board-certified psychiatrist-led care for all ages, from young adult to geriatric patients, with the option to integrate psychiatric care with primary care
• Psychiatric medication management including diagnostic clarification and medication optimization
• Addiction psychiatry for a variety of substance use disorders and behavioral/compulsive addictions
• Long-acting injectable (LAI) treatments for conditions including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, psychosis, and substance use disorders
• Care for complex and treatment-resistant psychiatric disorder and post-hospitalization/transitional psychiatric care
• ADHD evaluation and treatment
• Trauma and PTSD-focused psychiatric care
• Perinatal, reproductive, and women’s mental health psychiatric care
• Men’s, LGBTQ+, and HIV/sexual health psychiatry
• Psychotherapy

The expansion is designed in part to address gaps in care for patients with substance use disorders and complex psychiatric conditions who may have difficulty finding providers equipped to manage multiple or co-occurring needs. Through PHNTX’s integrated model, behavioral health patients can also access primary care, laboratory services, pharmacy services, and case management within the organization.

Among the expanded services is a long-acting injectable (LAI) program for psychiatric and substance use disorders, an option that can reduce the need for patients to take certain medications daily and help them address challenges with medication adherence, which can also reduce the risk of hospitalization and other comorbidities. PHNTX is building the program on infrastructure already in place for long-acting injectable HIV treatment and prevention, including its in-house pharmacy capabilities, medication storage, clinical teams, and case management resources. The expanded program will offer injectable medications used to treat conditions including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, psychosis, and substance use disorders.

Donald Egan, MD, MPH has joined the organization as the Medical Director for Behavioral Health where he provides clinical leadership at PHNTX’s Uptown Physicians Group office. A Dallas-based psychiatrist with a subspecialty in addition psychiatry, Dr. Egan earned his MD/MPH from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Long School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he served as chief resident, followed by a fellowship in addiction psychiatry at UT Southwestern. Dr. Egan has authored and contributed to multiple publications in psychiatry and has received several honors. His clinical interests include LGBTQ+ mental health, substance use disorders, men’s mental health, medication-assisted treatment, sexual health, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and complex psychiatric conditions.

“Substance use disorders and complex psychiatric conditions are some of the most challenging areas of behavioral healthcare, and patients are often referred from one provider to another because their needs fall outside of a practice’s scope,” said Dr. Egan. “We want patients to have a place where they can talk openly about what they are experiencing, receive a thorough evaluation, and have access to the level of treatment their individual situation requires. The goal is to understand the full picture and make it easier for people to get appropriate care before they reach a crisis.”

PHNTX aims to further extend its Behavioral Health services with the addition of an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). The organization has received state licensure for the programs and is currently building the clinical team needed to fully launch the services before the end of 2026.
