40 Years of LGBTQIA+ Healthcare in North Texas: How PHNTX Became a Trusted Medical Home

Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX) has spent nearly 40 years caring for the LGBTQIA+ community in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and across North Texas. Since 1986, PHNTX has grown from an HIV-focused response team into a trusted medical home for LGBTQIA+ care, primary medical care, dental care, behavioral health and psychiatry, and HIV medical care in North Texas.
Our Beginning in 1986
In 1986, the HIV epidemic was spreading, and many people in the Dallas area could not find safe, respectful healthcare. Widespread stigma made it harder to get care, ask questions, or trust a provider.
PHNTX, then called AIDS ARMS Network, began as a response to that crisis. The goal was clear: create a place where people living with HIV could get care, support, and dignity without shame.
Over time, the organization built trust by listening, learning, and showing up for the community year after year. That long commitment helped PHNTX grow into a familiar and dependable source of LGBTQIA+ healthcare in Dallas and the greater DFW area.
Growing with the Community
As HIV treatment improved, people needed more than one type of care. They needed help with whole-person health, including HIV care in North Texas, preventive services, mental health, dental care, and support for long-term conditions.
PHNTX expanded to meet those needs by offering:
- HIV prevention and sexual health services, including testing and PrEP
- Medical case management and support services
- Primary care for LGBTQIA+ adults
- Behavioral health services and affirming therapy in North Texas
- Community partnerships that connect more people to care across Dallas and North Texas
Through every stage of growth, the mission stayed the same: offer respectful, affirming care close to home.
A Trusted Medical Home
Today, PHNTX serves adults across DFW and surrounding cities who may have trouble finding a consistent medical home. Many are looking for timely appointments, clear costs, and providers who understand LGBTQIA+ health needs without judgment.
PHNTX now offers:
- LGBTQIA+ healthcare in Dallas
- Primary medical care
- Dental care
- Behavioral health and psychiatry
- Pharmacy access on or near clinic sites
For many patients, this means one trusted place for ongoing care instead of waiting until a problem becomes urgent.
Care That Feels Personal
The impact of this work is easier to see in everyday moments. A patient may first come to PHNTX for HIV care or a same-week sick visit, then return for primary care, counseling, dental care, and follow-up support because they finally found a clinic where they feel seen and respected.
Community partners across North Texas also rely on PHNTX because they know patients need more than one appointment. They need a care team that can support the whole person, explain next steps clearly, and help build stability over time.
Affordable and Timely Access
PHNTX understands that cost and wait times are two of the biggest reasons adults delay care. That is why the organization works to make healthcare easier to reach for insured, uninsured, and underinsured patients.
Patients can count on PHNTX to:
- Accept commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP
- Welcome both uninsured and underinsured patients
- Offer a sliding-fee scale based on income
- Explain costs clearly before or during the visit
- Provide same-week or next-available appointments for many services
- Share clear follow-up plans, referrals, and next steps
