Patient-Centered Care: Patient Feedback for Better Services

Published: 08-16-2024 | 2 MIN READ | Author: Andie Carver

Prism Health North Texas supports its community by ensuring marginalized groups–like LGBTQIA+ members, racial minorities, and low-income families–receive the healthcare they need. Despite the fast-paced environment of community healthcare, PHNTX maintains its commitment to patient-centered care through feedback from advisory groups, committees, and departments.

Note: our advisory groups may be restructured to accommodate to our patient population’s ever-evolving needs.

Patient Advisory Council (PAC)

Our Patient Advisory Council is comprised of diverse individuals who are each personally impacted by HIV/AIDS. These members each have over a decade of experience with HIV services, and they use their expertise to inform our overall patient experience and satisfaction. They even offer insight into community education endeavors, like approving topics for Beneath the Briefs, our podcast (season 4 coming this fall). We value patient feedback from diverse community members so much that we compensate those who participate. If you have feedback for PAC, you can send them a message here.

Sexual Health Advisory Group (SHAG)

Thanks to new funding from the CDC through ESSCHI, Enhancing STI and Sexual Health Clinic Infrastructure program, PNNTX recently formed Sexual Health Advisory Group or SHAG. Its mission is to “help increase access to sexual healthcare through meaningful community engagement and representation.” In early July 2024, PHNTX put out a call for SHAG applications and received many qualified applications from community members. We recently narrowed down dozens of interested applicants to 11 members. Membership takes place over the course of a year, and SHAG members will meet monthly and receive an honorarium per meeting for their service. Through the end of 2024, the SHAG facilitator, Javier Enriquez, will educate members on current issues in sexual health. Starting in 2025, they will confer to enhance patient experience and provide equity.

Transgender Task Force

PHNTX developed the Transgender Task Force in 2019 to ensure that the care we offer to our trans patients meets their unique needs. Currently, we have four Trans Task Force members, though we are looking for additional prospects among our, roughly, 400 trans patients.

Research Community Advisory Board

Our Clinical Research team also has a team of community members who offer insight into their protocols. The Research Community Advisory Board has seven members with a passion for studying, preventing, and treating HIV, Hepatitis A, B, and C, Covid, and Tuberculosis. Members meet bimonthly to review studies in their early stages to offer suggestions for improvement and ensure study ethicality.

Empowerment Connection Core Group

Empowerment Connection is an arm of PHNTX that creates social and support opportunities for our community members. Anyone can attend Empowerment Connection events. Empowerment Connection solicits applications for 10 members of its core group. EC attendees may be current or future PHNTX patients, so assuring new attendees feel welcome and accepted is vital. We greatly value core members and compensate them accordingly: Members receive stipends for weekly participation and event attendance.

Compliance Department

At PHNTX, we take patient feedback seriously, whether that come in-person, via email, Google Reviews, or social media. To maintain HIPAA compliance, our representatives must publicly respond with pre-approved messages. However, in the background, our Compliance Department notes each comment and reaches out to patients directly to get clarity on their grievances and improve services in the future. The Compliance Department is made up of several full-time employees who are committed to bettering patient care.
