Heart Health for Everyone: Primary Care’s Big Role

Published: 02-10-2026 | 2 MIN READ | Author: Prism Health North Texas

Every February, hearts take center stage on cards, decorations, and social media posts for Valentine’s Day, but this month is also American Heart Month!

Our Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX) primary care team helps patients keep their hearts healthy through preventive care, early detection, and ongoing support.

Primary Care: The Foundation of Heart Health

Many serious heart conditions start quietly.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and prediabetes/diabetes can show no symptoms for years, but they steadily increase your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Regular visits with your PCP are the best way to catch changes early and make adjustments before they become emergencies.

During a routine PHNTX primary care appointment, your provider tracks vital numbers like blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, which are all key indicators of your heart health.

Knowing Your Heart-Healthy Numbers

A strong heart health plan starts by understanding four essential metrics:

Blood Pressure

Good blood pressure is usually below 120/80. High readings at or above 130/80 can damage blood vessels and increase heart attack risk.

Cholesterol

LDL is considered “bad” cholesterol, and that number should be below 100. HDL is “good” cholesterol, and that number should be 40 or higher for men or 50 or higher for women.

Blood Sugar

A healthy blood sugar number is 70–99 mg/dL. Blood sugar levels at 100–125 mf/dL while fasting may indicate prediabetes. Numbers at or above 126 mg/dL on two separate tests are a sign of diabetes.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

While BMI isn’t a perfect look at your overall health, it is calculated using your height and weight to help determine if you are a healthy weight, but your provider will also consider muscle mass and overall lifestyle. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.

Building Healthier Habits for Life

This American Heart Month, small changes can make a big difference. Your PHNTX primary care provider can help you build sustainable habits that support your heart health, like:

  • Eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
  • Moving your body every day with any type of physical activity you enjoy: walking, swimming, or dancing
  • Reducing salt, sugar, and trans fats in meals
  • Managing stress and getting enough restful sleep
  • Quitting smoking or vaping and limiting alcohol

Our providers don’t just hand out advice. They partner with you to find realistic goals that fit your life, whether you’re balancing work, family, or other priorities.

Show Your Heart Some Love

This Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month, show yourself and your loved ones that you care by taking steps to protect your heart.

Scheduling a checkup is one of the simplest, most meaningful gifts you can give yourself.

PHNTX’s care model makes staying on top of these numbers simple. Onsite labs, same-day appointments, and compassionate providers mean your results and next steps are easy to understand and act on.
