Healthy Eating Tips for Growing Kids: Supporting Families Through Nutrition and Care

Published: 01-10-2025 | 1 MIN READ | Author: Prism Health North Texas

Good nutrition is essential for growing kids, laying the foundation for their physical and mental development. At Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX), we understand the importance of fueling healthy growth, which is why we’re excited to offer pediatric services at our South Dallas Health Center.

As Leslie Redden, RN, MSN, FNP-C, our new pediatric services provider puts it:

“Taking care of our youngest and most vulnerable population is something I am very passionate about. They need our advocacy, as well as do their parents. Listening to your patients and families when they present with concerns is incredibly important.”

Below are five simple tips to get your kids to eat healthier foods.

Nutrition Tips for Growing Kids

Start the Day Right with Breakfast

Breakfast fuels kids for the day ahead. Focus on balanced options like whole-grain toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fresh fruit, or scrambled eggs with veggies.

Pack Balanced Lunches

Include a variety of food groups in school lunches: lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy. For example, a turkey and cheese sandwich on whole-grain bread, baby carrots, an apple, and a yogurt cup make a complete meal.

Encourage Healthy Snacking

Swap out chips or candy for nutritious snacks like sliced cucumbers with hummus, a handful of trail mix, or low-fat string cheese and whole-grain crackers.

Make Dinner Family Time

Cooking meals together not only fosters family bonding but also helps kids develop a positive relationship with food. Include colorful vegetables and lean proteins in your dinner rotation.

Lead by Example

Kids learn by watching. Model healthy eating habits by choosing nutritious foods yourself, enjoying meals together, and being open to trying new dishes as a family.
