Your Child’s First Visit at PHNTX: What to Expect
Published: 01-08-2026 | 2 MIN READ | Author: Prism Health North Texas
Taking your child to see a provider at Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX) is a chance to check their health and help them feel safe and welcome. This type of visit is called a child well check or a well-child visit, and it is an important part of keeping kids healthy. Here’s what you can expect from your child’s first visit at our South Dallas Health Center.
Arriving at the Clinic
When you arrive, someone at the front desk will greet you and help you sign in. They can answer questions about your child’s appointment, insurance, or payment options.

What Happens at a Well-Child Checkup
A well-child checkup is a routine visit to see how your child is growing and developing. The care team will check your child’s height, weight, and vital signs, like heart rate and temperature.
Our kids’ health provider is Leslie Redden, RN, MSN, FNPC. She will listen to your child’s heart and lungs, look in their ears, nose, and throat, and check their eyes, skin, and belly. She will ask questions about sleep, eating, school, and behavior to make sure your child is doing well in all parts of life.
Well-Child Visit Schedule
Well-child visits happen on a regular schedule, starting when your child is a baby and continuing through the teen years. In the early years, these visits are more frequent because children grow and change so quickly.
As kids get older, well-child visits usually happen once a year. These regular checkups help catch problems early, keep immunizations up to date, and give you time to ask questions about your child’s health.
A Kid-Friendly Experience at PHNTX
At PHNTX, the pediatric team works hard to make visits fun and less stressful for children.
Leslie often dresses up in fun outfits, especially around the holidays. In October, she dressed up as Cinderella and visited the Head Start near the clinic, and the kids loved it.

After each well-child or sick visit with Leslie, your child can pick a prize from Leslie’s treasure chest of goodies as a reward for doing a great job.
Payment, Insurance, and Sliding Fee Scale
PHNTX does not turn anyone away, no matter their ability to pay. Families can apply for our sliding fee scale to see if they qualify for low-cost payments based on their income and household size.
For pediatric visits, PHNTX accepts Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, and most other major insurance plans. If you have questions about coverage, staff at the front desk can help you understand your options.
