Dr. John Carlo joined Prism Health North Texas as Chief Executive Officer in 2012. Previously he served as Program Director for the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and served as the Medical Director and Health Authority for Dallas County. Dr. Carlo has over 20 years of service in leadership roles for the American Medical Association (AMA), the Texas Medical Association (TMA), and the Dallas County Medical Society (DCMS).
He currently serves on the AMA’s Council on Science and Public Health and is a member of TMA’s Board of Trustees. He is a past chair for the TMA Councils on Socioeconomics, Science and Public Health, and Legislation. He is also a past president of DCMS. Dr. Carlo served as chair for the Texas Public Health Coalition which was instrumental in the passage of legislation raising the minimum age to 21 for buying tobacco in Texas. He also serves on various study boards and advisory groups, including the CDC-funded project entitled, Improving Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) Physician’s Capacity to Address COVID-19; the CDC/NNPHI Health Disparities Technical Assistance Center; and the DFW COVID-19 Seroprevalence Study.
In 2021, Dr. Carlo was awarded the Dr. Max Cole Distinguished Service Award by the DCMS, and in 2015 he was awarded the TMA’s Presidential Award for leadership during the Dallas Ebola crisis. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from Parkland Health for his role during Dallas’ support for Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Dr. Carlo received his Medical Degree from U.T. Southwestern in Dallas and completed a residency in General Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He received his Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University.
