Rhonda’s Story: Overcoming the Impossible

For Rhonda*, 59, a PHNTX patient living with HIV, catching COVID was not like catching the flu. She was hospitalized for two weeks with COVID and then spent another three months unable to work while she recovered from her illness. Despite struggling physically and financially, she kept her appointments, filled her prescriptions, and dutifully booked necessary follow-up visits. Rhonda understood the importance of staying on top of her medications.

However, she soon realized that she wouldn’t be able to afford co-pay for a follow-up visit. Even though Rhonda works full-time and has some health coverage through her employer, her outstanding hospital bills on top of rent and utilities were completely overwhelming. Scared and wondering what to do next, she explained to the receptionist that she had to make an impossible choice between continuing her HIV treatment and having a place to live.

Staff, concerned for her well-being and health, immediately jumped in to help. Imagine the weight lifted from Rhonda’s shoulders when, that same day, staff helped her sign up for financial assistance with her co-pays and even to secure relief funds to cover most of her outstanding hospital bills.
