Healthcare Access in North Texas: Why It Matters Now

Published: 05-08-2026 | 2 MIN READ | Author: Prism Health North Texas

In North Texas, how long you live can depend on where you live. In some parts of southern Dallas, people live about 17 years less than people in neighborhoods like the Park Cities. That is a big difference.

This is not because people in one place “care more” about their health. It is because some neighborhoods have doctors, hospitals, stores with healthy food, and safe parks, and others do not.

What “Access to Care” Really Means

Having “access to care” means more than having a hospital in the same county. It means:

  • You can get an appointment without waiting a very long time
  • You have a way to get to the doctor
  • You can pay for the visit and the medicine
  • You live in a place where it is possible to be healthy

In many parts of southern and southeast Dallas:

  • There are fewer doctors and very few hospitals
  • Grocery stores are far away
  • Many people do not have cars or easy bus or train routes
  • Many people do not have health insurance

All of this makes it hard to stay healthy or to catch health problems early.

How This Hurts Families

When people cannot easily see a doctor, small problems become big problems. In these neighborhoods, doctors see:

  • More diabetes, heart disease, and cancer
  • More kids going to the hospital for asthma
  • More people dying at a younger age

Families often face hard choices, like:

  • “Do I buy food, or do I buy my medicine?”
  • “Do I miss work and lose pay to see a doctor, or do I wait until I am very sick?”

These are not just personal struggles. They are signs that the whole system is not fair.

Good News: Change Is Possible

There is also hope. In some southern Dallas neighborhoods, health is starting to get better. Why?

  • New clinics and health centers are opening closer to where people live
  • More people are getting screened for diseases like diabetes
  • Health systems, community groups, and leaders are working together

When many people and groups focus on the same problem, things can change. But it takes time, teamwork, and support.

Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX) is committed to removing barriers to healthcare access in North Texas, and has over the past 40 years.
