Stay Safe in the Sun—It Matters for Your Health!

It’s fun to be outside, especially when the weather is warm and sunny. Whether you’re swimming, going for a walk, or just enjoying time with friends, being in the sun can feel great. But too much sun can be dangerous for your skin and your health. That’s why it’s important to protect yourself and stay safe in the sun every time you go outside.

Why the Sun Can Be Harmful

The sun gives off UV (ultraviolet) rays that you can’t see. These rays can hurt your skin, even on cloudy days. Getting too much sun can cause sunburn, which causes your skin to get red, sore, or even blisters. But it can also lead to more serious problems, like skin cancer.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the world. It can happen to anyone, no matter your age, skin color, or how often you go outside. The good news is that you can lower your risk by protecting yourself.

Simple Ways to Stay Safe in the Sun

Here are some easy steps you can take to protect your skin from the sun:

  • Use sunscreen every day. Choose one that says “broad-spectrum” and has SPF 30 or higher. Put it on 15 minutes before you go outside and reapply every 2 hours—or more if you’re swimming or sweating.
  • Wear protective clothing. Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats help block the sun.
  • Find shade. Sit under a tree, umbrella, or canopy when you can, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when sunlight is brightest.
  • Wear sunglasses. Your eyes can get damaged by UV rays too! Look for sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
  • Be extra careful near water, sand, and concrete. These surfaces reflect sunlight and can increase your exposure.

Do People with Darker Skin Have to Wear Sunscreen?

Sun protection is important for everyone! People with darker skin may not have as many visible changes under the sun, but they can still get sun damage and skin cancer. In fact, skin cancer in people with darker skin is sometimes overlooked or dismissed because it’s harder to see. Our providers are intimately familiar with the signs of skin damage in people of color and can catch issues early, before they get out of hand.
